Is smoking e-cigarettes during pregnancy safe?

When you are vaping,you are not sure what is in the vapors that you are inhaling.And if you are pregnant, it means you never know what is reaching your unborn baby.

Every woman,when she is pregnant will do anything to protect her baby in the womb.For some women who are a regular smoker, it is very difficult for them to quit smoking. So, they try switching from conventional cigarettes to e-cigarettes,thinking that they are safe to the fetus.

But are they really safe?

What are e-cigarettes?

E-cigarettes are those devices that deliver nicotine in the form of vapors,as a replacement of tobacco smoke in traditional cigarettes.They are available in many shapes, sizes for example pipes, pens, cigars etc.Similarly,they are called by different names like cigarlike,vape pens,mechanical mods.In e-cigarettes, cartridge gasping heats the water and releases vapors.The e-water which is heated,contains various levels of nicotine,and are either flavored or unflavored.

Is smoking e-cigarettes during pregnancy safe?

Now coming back to the question whether smoking e-cigarettes during pregnancy safe or not? Though it is the safest to quit smoking during pregnancy but it is also very difficult for a smoker to quit it at once.Therefore, from that point of view,e-cigarettes are better though not safe for a pregnant woman.They are 20 times less evil than traditional cigarettes.So, if vaping is helping a mother-to-be to avoid the traditional cigarettes, then it should not be discouraged. It acts as an alternative to get their nicotine fix,to which they are addicted.

But there are also many risk factors involved in smoking an e-cigarette during pregnancy. It affects the wellbeing of the unborn child in many ways. Some of them are as follows:

  • Those infants born to mothers using an e-cigarette,may suffer from many birth defects like low birth weight and learning disabilities.
  • Smoking also leads to miscarriage,preterm labour and stillbirth.
  • Smoking causes defects on face,and oral cavity in the unborn child.
  • There is an increased chance of cleft palates in the embryo.
  • Smoking affects the neural crest cells of the developing embryo which in turn leads to many defects in development of craniofacial structures such as cartilage,skin,teeth and glands.
  • The nicotine in the vapors are highly toxic to reproduction and affects fetal brain development.
  • Smoking also affects lung development and increases risk of sudden infant death syndrome.
  • Nicotine can also lead to placental damage,which is the main organ responsible for bringing oxygen and nutrients to the baby.
  • Even secondhand exposure to nicotine vapors during pregnancy can affect the unborn baby and cause several health problems.
  • Similarly,after birth also children of the mothers who were smoking during pregnancy are at higher risk of many health problems like colic, asthma,many defects in mental health problems like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD).

So,it is always recommended to avoid smoke of cigarettes and e-cigarettes vapors as much as possible during pregnancy.If you are a regular smoker and want to quit it,you can also opt for many nicotine quitting methods available.
